At least there's a lot of people to...talk to here, when I'm bored. And conversations keep on coming back to the same subject.

Maybe just the time~ of year, or maybe because of the place, but I think it goes to show the kind of thing people waste time to think about. So many opinions and no two the same.

Tell me, City~. What's a monster?

Somehow, they don't seem to care. They could think about other people, but they don't.

Because it's people like that who do the most horrible things.

Probably. Monsters don't have as much ambition... And people who en't monsters can be pretty horrible if they're trying to do something for some reason. Even if it's a good goal.

Their actions might be monstrous, maybe... but not the people. There's a difference.

If they~'re not, what makes them capable of it?

Some would say actions make the person.

Ruthlessness. Bloody-mindedness. Determination, whatever you want to call it. Knowing what you got to do to get something done, then doing it. But they care about something besides themselves, so they en't monsters.

Well... somewhat. Intentions are also important though.

Somehow I don't think they see it that way. That it makes us people not-monsters.

Well... Who's they? And yeah... most people en't monsters. Even the ones that are really horrible.

Oh, the Church. A lot of them just call everyone who opposes them a monster.

Not really-just practical.

Mm~, they do, don't they? And then they're surprised no one believes them the one time they're right.

Even when they're right about things, they still get it backwards. Like with Dust. Or Lord Asriel.

That's true, they don't understand anywhere near as much as they think they do.

Part of that's because they're so afraid of anything that contradicts what they think they know. Which explains why they were all so terrified of Lord Asriel. That, and he absolutely hated them.

And that was before he did what he set out to do.

Well... About that, we both agree. And they don't want anyone else to know anything either.

Easier to fight them, maybe. Afterwards... it makes things trickier.

I just think it's funny. It's what the Exorcists seem to think we're trying to do too.

Things won't be trickier if there is no afterwards.
